How Affordable Homeownership Changed Salim and Sanjida’s Future

Construction on Salim and Sanjida’s Habitat home began in November 2023, and they have now been living in their new home with their two children for over a year. Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with the family and reflect on how their lives have changed since becoming homeowners.
For Salim and Sanjida, homeownership was once a dream that felt out of reach. Since moving into their Habitat home, Salim has returned to school to purse his goal of becoming a police officer. The stability and security of having an affordable home gave him the confidence and opportunity to invest in his future. Their children now have a safe and healthy space to grow, play, and simply be kids. The house has provided more than just an addition room, but it created an environment where the entire family can thrive.
A Challenging Journey
After moving to Canada, Salim and Sanjida faced many challenges while trying to find stable and affordable housing for their growing family. To make ends meet, Salim worked multiple jobs, but rising rental cost made it increasingly difficult to get ahead. For four years, their family of four lived in a small two-bedroom condo with limited space. Despite working hard, homeownership seemed unattainable.
Why Affordable Homeownership Matters

Salim’s story is a powerful example of the impact affordable homeownership can have on a family. Moving from a cramped two-bedroom condo into a three-bedroom home has provided the space and stability they need to build a better future.
Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan’s Affordable Homeownership Program helps families purchase a home at a fair market value with no downpayment and an interest-free mortgage. Families contribute 25% of their gross household income toward their mortgage, making homeownership both manageable and sustainable long term.
