Noor and Sofia Celebrate Overcoming Hardships to making Homeownership a Reality

Yesterday, Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan held a heartwarming Key Ceremony in Prince Albert, marking the completion of a new home for Noor and Sofia. The event was a joyful gathering of staff, families, donors, and key stakeholders celebrating the newest Habitat homeowners.

From Somalia to Saskatchewan: A Family’s Journey

Noor and Sofia’s story is one of resilience and hope. Having escaped the civil war in Somalia, they arrived in Canada in 2012, determined to create a better future for their six children. They enrolled their kids in French immersion school and pursued further education at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. After enduring unsafe government housing, they learned about Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program through their volunteer work and saw a glimmer of hope.

Building a Home, Building a Future

Upon acceptance into the program, Noor and Sofia signed their partnership agreement and immediately began working towards the required 500 volunteer hours, which they completed in June. Their hard work and dedication culminated in receiving the keys to their new home, a significant milestone that symbolizes a new beginning for their family.

“Our journey wasn’t the easiest, but we’ve never lost hope. We’ve worked tirelessly to provide a better life for our children, to give them opportunities we never had. Applying for homeownership through Habitat Saskatchewan was a ray of hope for us. We needed a better home for our kids, a safe and secure place where they could grow and thrive. This opportunity means the world to our family, and we can’t wait to start this new chapter in our lives and to create new memories with our family” – Sofia and Noor

Community Support and Dedication

Today’s Key Ceremony is a testament to the impact of Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership program in building stronger, more resilient communities.”

The project was made possible by the financial contributions of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and the City of Prince Albert. The construction of Noor and Sofia’s new home was a collaborative effort, led by Ironwood Construction, RNS Mechanical, and TC Electric, with additional support from Vetter Drafting and Home Design, Econo Lumber, Prakash Consulting, and FloForm Countertops. The finished bi-level home features 1,104 square feet, five bedrooms, two full baths, and a developed basement.
