In a world marked by conflict and uncertainty, stories of resilience and hope shine through, reminding us of the strength of the human spirit. The story of Safaa and Marleen is one such tale, a journey that began in Iraq and led them to embrace a new life in Canada. Along the way, they faced unimaginable challenges, but through their determination and the support of Habitat for Humanity, they found a place they could finally call home. Join us as we explore their inspiring journey toward stability, security, and the fulfillment of their dreams.
Safaa worked as a chef in Baghdad’s Government restaurant, while he and Marleen, both Christians, lived amidst the constant fear that surrounded them. The escalating violence and bombings in their hometown only intensified their apprehension. To make matters worse, the restaurant Safaa worked at became the food supplier for American troops, putting his life in grave danger. Tragedy struck when eight of Safaa’s co-workers were tragically killed, and a chilling note arrived at their doorstep, threatening Safaa’s life as well.
With their lives hanging in the balance, Safaa and Marleen made the difficult decision to flee their homeland, seeking safety in Syria. There, in a refugee camp, they welcomed the birth of their eldest daughter, Madjeleena. However, their aspirations for a secure future led them even further, to the shores of Canada, where they arrived with little more than their hopes and determination.
Regina, a city known for its welcoming nature, became the backdrop for Safaa and Marleen’s pursuit of a better life. Although they left behind everything familiar, they were driven by a desire to shield their daughters, Madjeleena, Sarah, and Maritta, from the terrors of their homeland. Despite facing numerous challenges, Safaa and Marleen remained resolute in their quest for stability and the chance to provide their children with opportunities that were previously unimaginable.
Working tirelessly in multiple jobs, Safaa and Marleen discovered that saving for a down payment on a home was an uphill battle. Their rental unit proved too cramped for their growing family, leaving little room for their daughters to play freely. Determined to create a secure and nurturing environment for their children, Safaa and Marleen turned to Habitat for Humanity, seeing it as a beacon of hope in their pursuit of homeownership.
Safaa and Marleen applied to become a Habitat partner family, a process that would allow them to turn their dreams into reality. Upon acceptance, they dedicated themselves to completing the required volunteer hours, working alongside volunteers to build homes for others in need. Finally, in November 2018, the moment they had longed for arrived—Safaa and Marleen received the keys and signed their mortgage to their very own Habitat for Humanity home.
Stepping across the threshold of their new home, Safaa and Marleen were overwhelmed by a mix of emotions. Marleen recalls the profound sense of belonging that washed over her, realizing that this was not just a house, but a place they could truly call home. Their daughters revelled in the joy of having their own room, while the family embraced the opportunity to put down roots in their welcoming neighbourhood.
Since moving into their Habitat home, Safaa and Marleen have found a renewed sense of confidence, stability, and pride. Their daughters now have the space to grow and thrive, and the family has established strong connections within their community. From skating on the local outdoor rink to envisioning a future filled with promise, Safaa and Marleen are excited to witness their daughters’ growth and create lasting memories in their new home.
Safaa and Marleen’s remarkable journey from fear and uncertainty to hope and stability is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of safe, affordable housing. Through their partnership with Habitat for Humanity, they have not only achieved the dream of homeownership but also built a foundation for their family’s future. Their story inspires us to recognize the profound impact that affordable housing in Regina can have on individuals and communities alike. As we celebrate their triumphs, let us remember that together, we can transform lives and create a world where everyone has a place to call home.
